Protests Erupt Outside Mexico City Stadium During World Cup 2026 Opener
Mexico City witnessed significant protests outside the stadium hosting the opening match of the 2026 World Cup, with hundreds of demonstrators gathering for various reasons.
According to reports, multiple protest groups converged around the venue to voice their opposition to social, political, and economic issues. Among their concerns were the over 130,000 disappearances in Mexico since 2006 and demands for higher wages for teachers and healthcare workers. Additionally, some protests were related to the closure of a local animal shelter.
Police intervened to prevent protesters from reaching the stadium, resulting in clashes between the two sides. In some instances, these confrontations escalated into limited acts of violence as authorities attempted to disperse the crowds.
No official injuries have been reported so far due to these events. Meanwhile, heightened security measures remained in place around the stadium to ensure that the opening match proceeded smoothly.
The protests occurred as global attention turned towards Mexico, one of the host nations for this year’s World Cup, which is being held for the first time jointly by Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
