Injury Concerns Shadow Neymar’s Final World Cup Dance with Brazil

Written byFerdous Saeed

The Brazilian national team’s aspirations for the 2026 World Cup have hit a significant setback as Italian coach Carlo Ancelotti faces a complex decision regarding the fate of captain Neymar Jr., whose ability to continue in the tournament hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico is now in doubt.

Brazil enters this edition with soaring morale, aiming for a sixth star, which has eluded them since 2002, and seeking to replicate their 1994 World Cup success on American soil. This tournament was expected to be Neymar’s final dance on the world stage.

From Challenge to Shock: A Dramatic Scenario for the Santos Captain

Neymar, 34, has endured a challenging year, beginning with a serious injury at the end of last year that required complex surgery. This was followed by sharp criticism regarding his fitness and weight during matches with Santos. Despite Ancelotti’s repeated assurances that he would only call up players in peak condition, he surprised everyone by including Neymar in the final squad and became a staunch defender of the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star.

However, betting on Neymar has sparked a storm of local controversy, especially after excluding players like Chelsea’s João Pedro, who had an exceptional season. The situation worsened dramatically when Neymar suffered a severe calf injury during training.

Wake-Up Call: Absence Could Extend Through Group Stage

According to Nico Diaz Mendez, a correspondent for Telesport from inside the Brazilian training camp, the crisis is more severe than anticipated. Neymar, who was already sidelined from the final warm-up match against Egypt, is not only set to miss Brazil’s opening clash against Morocco but medical forecasts suggest he could be absent for the entire group stage.

Neymar boasts an illustrious career with the national team, having played 128 international matches and becoming Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals—surpassing Pelé. In his World Cup appearances across three editions (2014, 2018, and 2022), he has scored eight goals and provided four assists in 13 matches.
